Top dental hygiene for just $25

Mallory Levantis used to grit her teeth when it was time to go to the dentist.

“I’d look at my mom and say, `Don’t make me go,’” the 22-year-old recalls. Now, “I love it,” she says, grinning from ear to ear as her hygienist offers tips on proper brushing and flossing techniques.

Levantis, a first-year college student, has plenty to smile about. Not only is she getting a full range of dental hygiene services in a friendly, inviting atmosphere, she’s having to put little money where her mouth is.

This is Durham College’s dental clinic, where adults pay a flat rate of $25 (children $10) for cleaning, X-rays, periodontal scaling, oral cancer screening, sealants and fluoride treatment.

Students from the one-year dental assisting and two-year hygiene programs provide the services as part of their hands-on training. Supervised by registered dental hygienists and a staff dentist, they work to high standards with the latest technology.
